The Heart

This human heart, so hard to fathom, Its desires, so hard to tame, Vanity, pride, it ever craves, And our emotions, it never tames.

The Heart

We covet what our brothers have,
Jealousy and envy take control,
We hide our greed so well,
And let our hearts grow cold.

We revel in the failure of others,
Finding joy in their despair,
Living in a fallen world,
Where love is hard to bear.

We crave love, yet give out hate,
We want good things but resent,
When others have them too,
Wickedness, envy, and jealousy,
All stemming from a deep-seated need,
To feel superior, we try to hide our insecurities,
Protecting ourselves from feeling inferior,
So it's clear, true love starts with self-love.

When self-love becomes hard to find,
And what we love feels less than fine,
Loving others becomes a fight,
Held hostage by our insecurities and blight.
We see those who threaten our self-worth,
As competitors, and push away their light.
Or view them with suspicion and doubt,
As we hide in our own plight,
And good connections wither.

So let us strive to love ourselves first,
And understand our worth and value,
For only then can we truly love,
And our hearts will truly be full.

This world is harsh and callous,
The heart, a mystery to grasp,
But let us seek to understand it,
And strive to live as Christ has asked.
To love God with all our heart
And our neighbor as ourselves
